On August 12, 2016, over 70 Moreland School District staff members, as well as Superintendent Bob Bravo of CUHSD, participated in a poverty simulation facilitated by Step Up Silicon Valley. All participants were given an identity as they “walked a mile” trying to survive one month as a family member or individual living in poverty in Silicon Valley. The goal of the event is to shine a spotlight on humanity: the quality that makes us human, such as the ability to love, have compassion or be creative.

Community Action 2 hour who are you engage your community and learn how to  live in a low-income to chew ation or family you have a first hour that's broken into for 15 minute can you farm families with unique identities how to struggle to make ends meet on my way to see how your living situation is when you have to whatever title you need to pay for it and if we need to take care of and you interact with various resource  places that you would have to in rock whatever players on security things like that and you really feel the stress of trying to get everywhere at once to just make the regular week work the first to sterilize the same then I can't I have no Mobility you're welcome but my wife is at work Sylvia Martin my name is Darrell and my story actually started way back in childhood  blueberry family ran away from home when I was 16 have a daughter of we recently became real end because that was one of the thing  5 years old  she was taken from me because I could in 2005 I was working as a dispatcher at HP I was a contractor and they unfortunately laid us off when they laid us off I couldn't find a work immediately so I've had to pay my rent through my savings why didn't have a big savings I think about $5,000 in the bank and it's slowly slowly diminished and I was thinking on my goodness I can't find something anything right now is looking everywhere for a job and couldn't find a job and realize that I was in the I didn't have any money in the bank and what am I going to do I can't pay my rent one fortunately I had exhausted my phone asking family and friends from need to help me and I found myself having to make a choice of where do I go so I ended up in a homeless shelter it was creating I had my 5 years what time would be at the time he didn't we both didn't know what to do I never been in that experience I'm from the Midwest from ship Up Chicago and I never spit at homeless you know always been able to find a job this time I had to give my son up to his to my grandmother he was upset with me because when the shelter is a different environment everybody's over everything kids are fighting over because nobody has toys and nobody has anything and they're always fighting I thought it was be a better a better chance for him to get away from that kind crowd was hard he was having a lot of problems in school and I was telling you know why you making it hard for Mom and you know problems as well and now I understand that Minecraft maps University Florida maybe a $50 boxer I don't get there before they try to sell it to somebody Nickelback  until I go see doctor but we don't have Medicare for me to go see a doctor so I know but have it is I'm getting ready to go to college where is Cortana My Little Pony Siri's birthday shelter I am sitting at right now and my family had just gotten into this family home soundtrack just a little while ago and we've been going through tough times trying to figure out where to be where to stay on I want to get like made fun of as the kid that doesn't really have anywhere to be cuz I wasn't raised in a world where things were to be worried how are those last stress so now that there is all this stress and I'm at the age where it's already tough it is as it is to understand things it's already that tough so just trying to be okay as what I'm looking after been searching for affordable housing turn on the pavement since December 2013 waiting list for those are so long we got to apartments that we're all waiting list for them are in 2 to 5 years some setup just give us a range of several years and we're not the only ones and thousands of other families that are in the same exact situation I mean I try not to talk about I try not to bring school life and life life together cuz then I start getting confused where everything but sometimes I give us a substitute family for my own stories sometimes like somebody the housing is getting terrible Mall oh yeah I know this I know this kid is going to some hard times and then everybody else would be like all hate to be that person that just doesn't help with the whole Kinder keep things together I mean I like like all like all chill like all kids children I've I have that idea what I want to be but now it's harder to try and say that this is the first step to go here when you're barely even able to take a step now that just makes it I want to be musicianist say I wouldn't mind that and like maybe I'll be an athlete something but can't say for sure because it's can't get through what we're going through yet  that's just hard to figure out what's going on at the how are getting what's going on now
