The California Healthy Youth Act requires that comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education be provided to students at least once in middle school and once in high school, starting in grade 7. Per the California Healthy Youth Act, instruction must be medically accurate, age-appropriate and inclusive of all students, and must encourage students to communicate with parents, guardians, or other trusted adults about human sexuality.
The Moreland School District adopted the Positive Prevention Plus (PPP) curriculum to be taught to 7th grade students each school year. Your student's science teacher will provide this instruction.
Prior to this instruction, parents/guardians will be invited to attend or view a live or recorded parent education night to learn about the curriculum.
The parent education night content will allow parents and guardians to:
- Receive an overview of the state requirements as defined in the California Healthy Youth Act.
- Have a guided review of all lessons and content materials that will be offered in the PPP curriculum.
- Become acquainted with what parents need to know as their children approach and go through puberty.
- Identify ways to initiate conversations with your child and answer sensitive questions.
Opt-Out:
State law allows parents/guardians to remove (opt-out) their student from this instruction, either selected lessons or the entire program. Please note that if opting out of selected lessons, there is a chance that topic may come up again during one of the following sessions through student or classroom discussions. Students who are not participating in comprehensive sexual health lesson(s) will complete an alternate set of lessons.
