EDS Student Wins District Future Chef Competition

San Jose, May 9, 2023:  Moreland School District is proud to announce that fourth grade Easterbrook Discovery School (EDS) student, Lorelei Chambers, has been selected as Moreland School District’s Future Chef Competition winner. The competition took place on Wednesday, May 8, 2023, in the Moreland Middle School cafeteria.

After 3rd - 5th-grade students submitted recipes, finalists were selected to represent their elementary and K-8 school. The category this year was “Favorite Fruit or Vegetable Side Dish,” and students were judged on originality, health attributes, ease of preparation, kid appeal, plate presentation, and taste.

Lorelei’s winning recipe was Cauliflower Fried Rice. As the District winner, Lorelei won a Fitbit, 15-piece cooking set, and Young Chef cookbook. Additional honors included:

  • Best Plate Presentation: Trinity Tsoi, 4th grade, Latimer School: Fresh Fruit Salad

  • Most Healthy Attributes: Lorelei Chambers, 4th grade, Easterbrook Discovery School: Cauliflower Fried Rice 

  • Originality: Nick Kheiry, 3rd grade, Country Lane Elementary School: Beet and Pomegranate Salad

  • Best Kid Appeal: Ryan Hammer, 4th grade, Baker Elementary School: Bruschetta Pasta Salad

  • Best Ease of Preparation: Gabe Advincula, 4th grade, Payne Elementary School, Heavenly Hummus & Cucumber Bites

Future Chef is a national cooking competition sponsored by Sodexo Food Services that begins at the school district level.  In past years, winners have the opportunity to advance to Regional and National levels, competing with students from all over the country.  Previous Future Chef competitions have focused on “Fiesta Fit”, “Healthy Breakfast Challenge”, “Asian Fusion”, and “Healthy After-School Snack”  recipes.
