Moreland Middle School Teacher Writes and Illustrates Book to Promote Student Recycling

San Jose, April 22, 2022:  Moreland Middle School Math/Science Teacher, Shane McDonough, has written and illustrated a book about recycling titled, Lucy Recycles. Shared with educators and families in several school districts, Shane encourages families to review the accompanying website and e-book together with their students for Earth Day today, April 22, 2022.

A Stanford Wipro Science Education Fellowship participant, Shane wrote and illustrated Lucy Recycles as part of her year-long Growth Plan System project in 2020. “My project was aimed at improving sustainability awareness and education at Moreland Middle School and beyond. Writing and illustrating Lucy Recycles was one piece of that project. I also worked with the Moreland Middle School Green Keepers Club to make a recycling video,” shared Shane.

Shane was inspired to write Lucy Recycles to give students in the Moreland community a story they can relate to about environmental concerns. Shane shares, “I wanted to drive home the message that everything you do makes a difference, no matter how small.”

Shane has been the teacher lead of the Moreland Middle School student Green Keepers Club since the 2018/2019 school year. Students in this lunchtime club are promoting recycling and sustainability around campus by picking up recyclables in classrooms weekly, creating recycling guides to post in classrooms, and sharing tips about recycling and sustainability on morning announcements.
