Moreland School District Now Accepting Applications for Provisional Board Appointment

San Jose, May 11, 2026: The Moreland School District Board of Trustees is now officially accepting applications to fill the vacancy in Trustee Area 1. Shelly Hong stepped down from her trustee position last month due to a residency change. The Board voted at its April 28 to fill the vacancy through a provisional appointment process, ensuring a smooth leadership transition and maintaining the district’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.

The application window is now open and the Board is seeking a qualified community member to serve via provisional appointment.

Because the district operates under a by-trustee area election system, each trustee must reside within a specific defined area. The vacancy is for Trustee Area 1. Interested applicants can confirm their residency using the district’s Approved Trustee Areas map.

The Board encourages interested and eligible community members to apply for this position and take part in shaping the future of Moreland schools. Below is information regarding the application process, eligibility requirements, and the timeline for filling this vacancy.

To be considered for appointment to the Board of Trustees, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a United States citizen and a resident of the school district (Trustee Area 1)
  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must not be disqualified by the Constitution or state laws from holding a civil office
  • Employees of the school district must resign from their position before being sworn into office, per Education Code 35107

There are two ways to obtain and submit an application:

  • Option 1: Download the Application Here
  • Option 2: Pick Up in Person – Applications can be collected at the district office during regular business hours:

Completed applications must be submitted to Debbie Petty, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent, via email, electronically, or in person. To schedule an appointment for in-person submission, applicants may contact Debbie at (408) 874-2901 or [email protected].

The deadline for submission is May 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered. Interested candidates are invited to an informational session with the Superintendent on Thursday, May 21 at 3:00 p.m. to learn more about the process and service commitment.

The Board will hold interviews during a Special Board Meeting on Saturday, June 6 following the application review. The Board of Trustees remains committed to maintaining a strong, dedicated leadership team for MSD and looks forward to welcoming a new trustee who will contribute to the continued success of Moreland schools and students.
