In the Spring of 2020, Moreland campuses were closed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Easterbrook Discovery Middle School's Jazz Band submitted videos of themselves recording their individual parts to the song "Harlem Airshaft" at their home. Kyle Chesser of Hands On Studio donated his time and expertise to put it all together in this wonderful video.

Harlem Airshaft history:

According to a 1940 interview with Ellington, it was inspired by everyday noises heard in New York City, specifically the namesake, air shaft found between housing units.

Ellington recounted his inspiration in a 1944 interview published in The New Yorker:

So much goes on in a Harlem air shaft. You get the full essence of Harlem in an air shaft. You hear fights, you smell dinner, you hear intimate gossip floating down. You hear the radio. An air shaft is one great big loudspeaker. You see your neighbor’s laundry. You hear the janitor’s dogs. The man upstairs’ aerial falls down and breaks your window. You smell coffee. A wonderful thing is that smell. An air shaft has got every contrast. One guy is cooking dried fish with rice and another guy’s got a great big turkey. Guy-with-fish’s wife is a terrific cooker but the guy’s wife with the turkey is doing a sad job. You hear people praying, fighting, snoring. Jitterbugs [dancing] are jumping up and down always over you, never below you. That’s a funny thing about jitterbugs. They’re always over you. I tried to put all that in “Harlem Air Shaft.”

This video includes Jazz Band director, Nils Johnson.

Claire strives to ensure that Moreland Middle School is a community that practices inclusivity every day. As the leader of the Inclusivity Club/Human Rights Club she brings together a large gathering of diverse students to discuss issues. They address problems faced by marginalized students and explore how to provide a nurturing space for all. She is informed, passionate, and has an innate sense of justice. Her leadership brings students together to plan activities that engage other students to build a supportive and accepting community. One example of their collaborative work was the Day of Silence, designed to support the LGBTQ community and raise awareness about bullying and mental health issues.

“Middle school is a crazy time for kids and this doesn’t always happen at all schools, but through Claire’s dedication, support and leadership of the Inclusivity Club the past three years, Moreland Middle School has become a school where no students or staff will feel marginalized for their differences. Claire’s actions have led to greater acceptance at school and has made it a place where students feel safer, more connected, and more accepted.
The Moreland School District partnered with Stanford Children’s Health to answer questions about the status of COVID-19. This webinar was presented by Dr. Lee Sanders, Division Chief for General Pediatrics at Stanford Children’s Health and Co-Director for the Center for Policy, Outcomes and Prevention at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Sherri Sager, Senior Vice President and Chief Government Relations Officer at Stanford Children’s Health, and Dr. Clover Codd, Superintendent.

We are so grateful to have this partnership with these incredible healthcare professionals and community partners. Over the past two years, they have been with us, educating our community through webinars, providing free Covid-19 testing to our families and students through their Teen Van, as well as access to free vaccination clinics for our students and community multiple times since the pandemic began.
