Sexual Health Education in Seventh Grade
Comprehensive sexual health education has proven to increase positive health outcomes for students. Moreland has adopted Positive Prevention Plus, a curriculum aligned with CA Education Code 51933 and the California Healthy Youth Act (AB 329). This two-week class will be taught during seventh grade science instruction through May and June, 2018. This course uses up-to-date and medically accurate health information to address many of the health issues students face, or may face, in their lifetime.
It is a state requirement that parents or guardians be notified prior to instruction and be offered the opportunity to withhold their child’s participation from sexual health education in the 7th grade. If you wish to have your 7th grade student not participate in sexual health instruction, please complete the opt-out form (see link below). The form is also available in your child's school office. All opt-out forms are due to your child’s school office by Friday, April 27, 2018. Students not participating in the instruction will be given other academic assignments to be completed during the entire duration of the course, in a location to be determined by the school’s administrators.
Positive Prevention Plus resource materials are also available for parent preview in the school offices at Moreland Middle School, Latimer School, and Easterbrook Discovery School. Parents are encouraged to check in with their school offices for more details.
In support of sexual health education, the Moreland School District invites you to attend the following Sexual Health Parent Information Evenings led by Heidi Winig, Director of Bay Area Communities for Health Education (BACHE) at the District Office, 4711 Campbell Avenue, San Jose.
