In Language Arts, teachers have created assessment calendars and curriculum maps that outline the California State Standards. The school year is broken down into 3 testing cycles that each last 8 weeks. At the start of the cycle, students take a pretest that focuses on reading comprehension. The results are analyzed by the administration and teachers to determine areas of need and set a baseline for growth. During the weeks that follow, teachers focus on one or two learning goals for the week. Each Friday, students are given benchmark assessments to determine mastery of their learning goal. This provides teachers with necessary information to plan their instruction and form reteaching groups. At the end of the cycle, students are given the post test, which is the same test they took at the beginning of the cycle. This post test provides us with valuable data on how students have progressed, where individual students are performing, and who needs extra support. These cycles allow us to know what standards are difficult for students and where to put our emphasis.
In Math, all teachers in grade K-5 have implemented our BoardMath program. This is a 20 min preview and review, conducted daily. The board is divided up into the main concepts in math: number sense, algebra & functions, measurement & geometry, statistics & probability, and mathematical reasoning. Each section has a set number of questions each day that are aligned the the California State Standards and formatted according to STAR. Students will have consistent exposure to this program as the progess up the grade levels.
Parent participation is important in improving student achievement. We recently merged our English Language Acquisition Committee (ELAC) and our Home and School Club. We meet each month to discuss ways to improve and support our school. One of the larger events that are sponsored by this group is our International Festival that takes place in May. Parents spend days cooking Mexican foods, students practice traditional dances, and teachers prepare for entertainment booths. All the hard work is worth it to be able to bring the community together. We encourage all parents to get involved by joining our ELAC and H&S club.
Anderson is excited to prepare for the upcoming years of success. Teachers are dedicated to working together to create an effective learning environment where all students’ needs are met and students love to come and learn.
