Help Your Child Succeed in School

Parents, brothers, sisters, and other influential role models at home are the most important factor in a child’s success in school.  What we say and do can help children develop positive attitudes toward learning and school.  It is important to get involved in your child’s school. Asking about their day, reviewing homework and reading the information that your child brings home or that is provided for you online show that you believe school is important.

Encourage your child to read by reading with him from an early age and don’t stop as he gets older.  Share books and magazines, discuss characters, plots, and story ideas.  Make visits to the library a fun shared time.  Set aside quiet time for family reading.    Reading helps students in all areas of study and is the key to lifelong learning.

Help your child develop good study skills.  Set up a regular time for homework in a specific location that is stocked with the supplies necessary to complete regular assignments, like paper, pencils, pens, a dictionary, calculator, index cards, and a stapler.  Remove distractions by turning off the television or music or having other children work or play in another space.

Good nutrition and adequate rest are also key factors in student success.  Send your child to school well rested and fed or with the means to get breakfast and/or lunch at school.

Moreland Community Rallies with
ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!

Schools in the Moreland School District have rallied students, parents, and staff to be part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Called out to perform the challenge by Moreland School District Board Member Julie Reynolds-Grabbe, Superintendent of Schools Mark Barmore and Anderson Elementary School Principal Tasha Quinonez were doused with buckets of ice and water on September 3rd. Both will also make donations toward Amyotrophic Latera Sclerosis (ALS).

Superintendant Barmore was also called out to accept the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by Moreland Middle School Dean Craig Williams. In honor of his former football coach and family friend Charlie Wedemeyer, Craig Williams sat in front of hundreds of Moreland Middle students and staff on August 22nd, and challenged each MMS student to donate $1 toward ALS before being doused with a bucket of ice and water himself. To date, the Moreland Middle community has raised over $650.
