Of the many amazing student programs at Baker, the nomination highlighted that their school community practices and models PBIS (Positive Behavior Incentive System) by focusing on a positive school culture rather than a punitive structure, Principal Chris Barbara writes a weekly “Just Be Nice” message to help strengthen UPstander skills in students, and students participate in leadership opportunities from a young age that include second grade “Big Buddies” to kindergarten students, Special Day Class (SDC) “Big Buddies” to younger SDC students and junior yard duties who learn peaceful conflict resolution skills.  In addition, Baker’s ABC (Asset Building Champion) Reading program includes 28 adult volunteers reading to 94% of the students annually for almost 12 years.  ABC Reading is Project Cornerstone’s parent engagement program that trains adult volunteers to read a specially selected book and lead related activities in the classroom to help students and school communities build a common language about student respect and behavior expectations.
