Moreland Team Advances to Global STEAM Competition

San Jose, April 11, 2017:  Moreland School District announced that Moreland Middle School’s Destination Imagination Team, The Funky Nut Blast, will advance to the 2017 Global Finals in Tennessee.  Having competed against 243 other teams from throughout California at the State Destination Imagination Tournament in Sacramento on April 1, 2017, in one of seven challenge categories, The Funky Nut Blast is one of 60 teams that will advance in either the elementary, middle, or senior level.

The Funky Nut Blast, a team of three 8th graders from Moreland Middle School, chose the Improvisational challenge: 3-Peat.  Their task was to create three improvisational skits from the same story prompt, each in a different performance genre, while portraying a different stock character in each skit.

The Funky Nut Blast middle school members are currently raising money to attend the Global Competition.  To view their GoFund me page, visit:  https://www.gofundme.com/funkynutblastglobals

Destination Imagination is a project-based program that builds participants’ creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork.  Student teams work outside the school day to practice solving open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments.  The Destination Imagination process includes 21st Century Skills, STEAM based challenges, leadership skills, and art appreciation.  Destination Imagination is available to Kindergarten - College students in the United States and more than 40 countries.  In teams of 2 - 7 participants per challenge, Destination Imagination encourages imagination and innovation.

This year, Moreland had 11 teams compete in the Silicon Valley Regional Tournament.  Seven Moreland teams from Country Lane, Latimer, Payne and Moreland Middle School placed in the top 3 of their challenge category, moving on to compete in the State Tournament in Sacramento, California earlier this month.

The 2017 Destination Imagination Global Finals, with students from 45 states in the US and 14 countries throughout the world, will take place at the University of Tennessee on May 24-27, 2017.
